Musical Associations & Influences
The composers Ben mentioned
most, wrote about, or dedicated his compositions to, were
Thalberg and Liszt.
In Ben's drawer of manuscripts and keepsakes, was a studio-quality photo of Lou
Harrison, who Ben asked for help in the pursuit of getting performed and
published.
In addition, an original manuscript of John Cage's
"(First) Construction in Metal", was found amongst Ben's scores. We don't know if Ben ever met
Cage, but on one occaision Ben said, "Cage was a very important figure in music
-- don't get me wrong, but I question how playable his compositions are. After
all, how many musicians prepare themselves for breaking automobile windshields
in a concert setting?"
